About Me

Olavo Xavier Photographer

Art That Begins With Unlearning

I wasn’t born an artist.

I became one the day I couldn’t bear pretending anymore.

My name is Olavo Xavier. I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and spent years living the version of life that others expected from me: corporate jobs, perfect suits, success metrics. From the outside, everything looked right. Inside, I was falling apart.

At 33, I walked away from it all.

Not out of courage, but necessity.

I returned to what once made sense: sound. Light. Silence. The need to create. I studied design, enrolled in an art school, and found myself holding a camera. It felt like coming home to something I didn’t know I had lost.

Photography gave me rhythm again, not the rhythm of routines, but of breathing, noticing, feeling.

From Brazil to California

I’m currently based in California, where I continue building a body of work rooted in emotional tension, silence, contrast, and memory. My images live in the space between observation and reflection, often monochromatic, always intentional.

But my origin is Rio. My eyes were trained by the light of that city, its texture, its chaos and calm. And even when my images are quiet, they carry the vibration of where I came from.

My Artistic Process

For me, photography is musical.

Each piece has a beat, a pause, a crescendo. I compose with silence as much as with light.

I shoot only when I feel something shift in me, in the subject, in the atmosphere. The image doesn’t come first. The sensation does.

My editing process is obsessive. I test paper, tones, and framing until the image sounds right. If it doesn’t move me, I don’t release it.

Values That Shape My Work

  • Precision is love – Every detail matters.
  • Emotion is non-negotiable – The viewer must feel.
  • Art is not neutral – I stand for freedom, diversity and inclusion.
  • Intention is everything – I don’t shoot to decorate. I shoot to disrupt.

Behind the Camera

A glimpse into the silence before the image. The editing table. The paper tests. The artist not staging, but composing.
